5 weeks Old

Joseph is now nearly 6 weeks old. Here are some stats from his one month appointment, though the measurements were taken when he was 5 weeks old.

Weight: 11lbs 4.5 oz, 90%
Height: 22 1/4 ", 75%
Head Circ: 15, 50%

Joseph has gained 3 lbs in just 3 weeks, and has grown an inch and a half since birth! It is fun to see his cheeks fill out, and now that he feels sturdier, I worry less about what Ian can do to him.

While Ian is working on being "gentle" and "soft" when he touches Joseph, these sentiments usually surface after he has flung a block at Joseph, or pretended --oops-- actually, stepped on Joseph's back during 'tummy time'. I love that after Ian is scolded for his treatment toward Joseph, Ian always gets a sympathetic look and then makes a motion like he is tousling Joseph's hair. Which is really funny, because Joseph is completely bald, except for a fringe of dark hair that hangs around the back of his head.

Here, Joseph was snuggled up on Scott's lap, when Ian come over and rearranged things to make room for himself.
Ian looks comfy, and Joseph looks like he doesn't care that he isn't.

But actually, I think Ian likes Joseph these days, and is always quick to notify me when he hears Joseph over the baby monitor: "Baby Joseph sad. Joseph cry." Followed by "Go get him. Right back. Hurry Hurry." It is fun to see Ian taking on what seems like a watchful big brother's role. He even offers Joseph his binkie, a privilege rarely granted to anyone else.

These days, Joseph is developing a more regular eating and sleeping schedule. It emerged on it's own, but I like it, so I have been careful to enforce it. He usually wakes up just before 7 am, and begins a cycle of eat, 'play' for 1 hour, sleep for 2, then do it again. He does this until around 7 pm, at which point he eats every 3.5 to 6 (!) hours and then goes immediately back to sleep. And thank goodness for it-- I have learned that I am quite tied to the regularity and dependability of schedules, and the whole irregularity of newborness had been hard for me. Without a schedule how on earth do you know what they are crying for?! And when you can sneak away to use the restroom? Or take a nap? So now that we near the 6 week mark, we are all feeling a little more normal. Finally! Phew! I think we can do this two-kid thing after all!

Here is Ian enjoying his favorite pastime; building "big, big, bunny house". Notice his favorite rabbit lounging inside.

It's so good to hear your update! Jonathan's head was 15 inches when he was born. Ugh.

I'm so glad that Joseph is on a good schedule--it is wonderful. I'm impressed that you're handling two kids that are 18 months apart after a C-section! You are really rocking it, girl.

And good thing, 'cause your boys are ADORABLE!

That's amazing that he is already falling into a schedule! It makes me feel more geared up for those first crazy weeks with a newborn!

Aaahhh...schedules, aren't they wonderful? I totally know what you mean about the irregularity of newbornness, it makes it so hard to do anything! I'm glad you guys are starting to feel more normal again!

Oh, I just ADORE these pictures!! Your boys are SO SWEET together. I love hearing how Ian is adjusting to his little bro. Isn't it just the neatest thing to see "da boys" together.

I'm super impressed how you've reinforced his natural schedule. You are an INCREDIBLE mom!! Those boys of yours are very, very lucky!!!

SO CUTE!!! I love the "Ian moves Joseph out of the way" thing. Hahahaha. To be fair, Joseph was sitting on Ian's dad.

You are amazing!!! I am so impressed. I'm so glad that your two kids are treating you well!

It sounds like the fog has lifted! You are AWESOME!

Oh my goodness! I've missed so much!

I can't wait to see Ian and Joseph in real life. I love that Ian moved him. haha. What a cute little guy. Joseph makes me want a little baby boy next. He is adorable, Lesley. You make really cute babies. Dec 3rd needs to hurry up and come!

The boys sure are cute. As this baby gets nearer to making her enterance into this world I'm getting more and more panicked about life after labor (not necessarily labor, which I probably ought to fear a little more). Take good notes on this stage so you can help me survive when it's my turn.

What cute kids you have. I can't wait until the wedding so I can see you guys.

I love the whole schedule thing too. I feel lost without one. Only with my kids I would just get used to a schedule and then they would go and change it up on me...like when a stuborn three year old decides they don't want to take a nap any more.

Carson was just like Joseph sleeping so good at night until the past 3 days! Now he is up again every 2 hours. I'm not sure what is going on with him, but it's driving me nuts!

What cute boys. Do you think Ian would share his pacifier with Erica? We would like to meet your sons some day. I'm glad to see Ian is exhibiting some engineering skills already. That will make a good occupation for supporting our daughter.

What adorable boys you have! Benjamin does that funny "hair tousle" thing also, and his brother doesn't really have any hair either! Where did they learn that?

Sorry, this comment is really late in coming! I love this update!! I'm still marveling at big, big bunny house, by the way.

It sounds like Joseph is doing really well!! Yay for some normalcy, right? I thrive on routine also. I'm like a three-year-old. It's so sweet how Ian like to listen for him and take care of him. And the binky sharing is so precious.

Great pictures!! Your little ones are growing so fast!!
