6 Months

Helen began eating vegetables (and loves peas, green beans and mixed vegetable) but gags on all fruits (like pureed apricots, bananas and blueberries!) She started rolling over more frequently, saying "Ba Ba Ba" and "Da Da Da" and began to watch her brothers with even more interest. She loves to "stand up".

She is learning to sit, but always arches her back and locks her legs so that it's impossible to get her into the sitting position. I have to trick her into it. When she is laying on the ground, her legs are up in the air. I grab a wrist and an ankle and, keeping her sort of folded in half, pull her gently up into sitting position. Voila!

Check out the outfit Ian selected for Helen. While the mixed patterns are a little dizzying, notice how the colors all coordinate! Ian loves to pick her clothes, and Joseph loves to select her bow and headband.

She still needs pillows behind her, otherwise she lets out a good cry when she topples over (which is currently about 60 seconds after sitting her up). Even though she doesn't move around much yet, she is still content to be on the floor. She also enjoys being held and will hold onto my shirt with a tight little fist while I carry her around.

Even though Helen and her Daddy don't get to see much of each other right now, (she wakes up after he leaves for the day, and goes to bed at 6 pm, an hour or less after he gets home from work), Helen absolutely adores him. She lights up and starts her legs 'a kickin' when she sees him, and is thrilled by his tickles and funny voices. Their relationship is sweet to watch.

Helen normally lets out a couple small whines to let me know when it's naptime or bedtime. But if I have stashed her away in the baby carrier while I do dishes or chase the boys on their bikes, she is even more content than normal and naptime and mealtimes can easily pass without a sound from her -- she is just so happy to be carted around with a good view!

People frequently comment that Helen looks a lot like Joseph, especially in the eyes. I actually think her looks and temperament are more like Ian at this age. Her wider, chubbier face, puffy cheeks and dimples, ears closer to her head, and her little lips just seem more like Ian as an infant. She's very even tempered, patient, pleasant and more low-energy (she will sit and examine things for long periods of time and doesn't need a change of scenery very often). All of this reminds me of Ian. Joseph was very high energy and physical, and thrived on attention and interaction. (We thought it was so funny how Joseph would stare intently at someone until they finally noticed. Then he'd grin and start talking to them.)

Also like Ian, her Little Blues are beginning to change to Baby Browns.

A doll crib my mom and I found at the Round Top antiques show. I love the bedding and mattress my mom made for it! They boys really enjoyed using it for their own babies until I hid it away in the attic.

Our baby girl is so much fun!

The Little Larsons

Joseph wanted to take some cars into his bed at nap time, but I explained that he needed to sleep instead of play with cars. He response: "I'm going to magic't it so I can sleep and play at the same time."
***
When I checked on Ian around 10 pm he was wedged between his bed and nightstand, standing up, with his head resting on his pillow, sound asleep.
 ***
Ian made this "guy" from items in the pantry
***
The boys set up their small table in a corner of the kitchen and began calling it their "craft table". I love that they always seem to stop and color for a few minutes whenever they walk by it.
Some garbage trucks and vans, by Ian.
 ***
Ian said some mean words to Joseph and then shoved him too. Joseph waited a moment, then walked up behind Ian and blew his nose on the back of Ian's shirt. Ian was wide-eyed with shock, but when he came to me for sympathy and I was laughing hysterically, he became much more angry!
***
The boys recently started to enjoy wrestling each other. It starts with one of them leaning into the other, and then they are both on the floor rolling around. Not surprisingly, they are very evenly matched. Ian calls out the score throughout, and while he awards both of them points, he always makes sure he has one point more than his brother.
***
Joseph has started singing along to the primary songs in the car. He'll declare "I just sang all of the words to that song!"
***
I recently decided to make a quick speech to my boys about Stranger Danger. I gave them some scenarios including a person in a car inviting them to come get some candy, or a puppy. Ian seemed to get it, but he wanted to do things like climb a tree to get away. Joseph did not seem to believe that the Stranger didn't actually have ice cream. I reexplained it several times and then asked Joseph what he was supposed to do if someone in a car started talking to him. He responded: " I will just say 'Please don't hurt me. Can I have that ice cream?'"
***
While I set up nativity scenes Joseph took several people and made his own display. On a step-stool, atop a Frisbee, with a Barrel of Monkeys.
When Helen was trying to fall asleep for a nap her binkie must have fallen out and she wasn't going to sleep. I was making dinner so I asked Ian to go upstairs and put her binkie in for her. I heard him talking and laughing over the baby monitor so after a few minutes I went up myself. Ian hand climbed into Helen's bed, pulled a blanket over himself, and was laying on his side right next to Helen, talking and singing to her.
***
After reading a Friend story about a boy deciding not to drink a sip of his neighbors beer, my boys have become intrigued and obsessed with the Word of Wisdom. They pretend to entice each other with tobacco and beer, and always comment on the liquor store when we pass it. The fact that the store has a giant bunny head on the sign seems really wrong to the boys.
 ***
Helen didn't say anything funny this month, but she is adorable and adds to the workout I get from vacuuming.
***
Joseph uses the word "none" in place of "any", along with some double-negatives. Unfortunately Ian has begun doing it too. Phrases like "I don't want none green beans" or "I don't like none girls with yellow hair" are often heard at our house.
 ***
The boys made "cake" out of wooden puzzles, ate the pieces, then pooped them out their pant legs. Charming.
***
While driving on the freeway Joseph said "This freeway sounds like my white noise machine."
***
Joseph calls Helen "Heh-when" and asks to hold her several times a day. Ian also holds her a few times a day, and doesn't walk past her without stopping to use his baby-voice with her and tickle her tummy. Ian likes to call her "Hellie".
***
When Helen wakes up the boys race to her room and hop in her crib. They usually toss in some toys and do some bouncing, too. That tie-dyed bundle is their defenseless, swaddled sister.
 ***
Ian was angry with me and said "I am going to put you in prison and then set the timer for ten years!"
***
Another time Ian got frustrated with me and built a wall of toys across the hallway to the loft, where I was building a tower with Joseph and Helen. Ian guarded the "prison" himself and put on a white dress shirt and black pants, and a police hat and badge. He would make a hole in the wall and check on us every so often, and once even delivered our meal of bread and water. Once we had learned our lesson, after about 45 minutes, he let us out. I was a little sad though -- it was nice to have nothing to do but play and have food delivered to me.
***
Ian continues to be girl-crazy. He exclaimed that he loved blue eyes, and asked dreamily, "Do you know what my favorite kind of blue eyes are? Six-year-old blue eyes."
***
I had Joseph and his preschool class doing puzzles, and Helen was in the baby carrier strapped to my front. Several of the boys decided they wanted to do the same firetruck puzzle and began to argue over it. I asked them to finish the puzzles they were already working on and then we would take turns with the firetruck puzzle. But the arguing over the puzzled was escalating. I leaned over to pick it up and Helen released a massive amount of spit-up all over the firetruck puzzle. The boys stared in shock, and then one boy picked up the puzzle, wiped it off, and played with it himself without any competition! What a great little mediator our Helen is!
***
While coloring Ian started listing off the girls he was planning to marry. I explained that maybe he didn't even know the girl he would marry -- that there were lots of girls who tried to make good choices and who loved the Book of Mormon. Joseph then declared that he was going to marry his good buddy Andrew Kearns. He was confused when I told him that actually, he needed to pick a girl. He replied "But Andrew makes good choices and knows the Book of Mormon!" Perhaps this is the flaw in an all-boys preschool.
***
Scott's high school football jerseys were a huge hit!
***
Ian and Joseph love to go out in the backyard and beat the low branches of a tree with a plastic rake. I appreciate that even a tiny bit of aggression is taken out on that tree instead of a sibling.
***
Joseph is always making observations about his bowel movements and body. Recently he said "My private part is as big as a little bear!"
***
The way Joseph pronounces "except" is really cute. He says "Kep-sep" with the second syllable really drawn out.
***
The boys have started threatening to not invite each other to their birthdays. The other always responds, "Well, then I will just sneak there anyway!"
***
They are obsessed with opening things that are locked. And their solution is always to "ax it open" or "ax it down". They talk about it more than they do anything about it.
***
Ian and Joseph take turns "reading" books and giving "talks" in pretend church meetings. Lately is has been taking place in front of the fire.
***
Ian created an "air tank" to wear to the mailbox. I think it was modeled after the firefighters air tank they saw recently. It involved a dog-shaped backpack with a long yellow ribbon running from the zippered compartment all the way to Ian's mouth. He sucked on the "air hose" the entire way to the mailbox and became very concerned when it was accidentally yanked from his mouth.
***
Before heading to the bathroom both boys always pull me aside and say exactly this "I'm going to go poop now, so can you wipe me?"
***
Ian always draws the letter Y, both upper and lower, with a serif on the bottom instead of the more typical curvy swoop. I finally figured out why: he is copying the BYU Y painted on his bedroom wall.
 ***
Ian is obsessed with BYU and Utah playing each other. When he found out BYU lost in their recent football game, Ian cried. Here he wrote the score of a pretend game, and made sure BYU won.
***
The boys still show disdain for anything red. They won't use it because "it has some Ute on it".
***
Several months ago Ian's primary was talking about temples and encouraging the children to hang a picture of the temple in their bedrooms. Ian raised his hand and explained "I can't hang a picture of the temple in my room. I have a BYU room."
***
Scott and Joseph have a sweet bedtime ritual where Scott cups one of Joseph's hands between two of his own hands. Joseph loves this and has started doing it with Helen. Even though he is usually tweeking her wrist in some uncomfortable way, he has a look of complete tenderness and love when he does it.
***
Joseph was peeling the wrapper off a crayon and Ian stopped him, saying "Don't keep doing that Joseph. The crayon will break and be broken forever, and we don't want that to happen, now do we?"
***
When the boys want to tell me something in my ear they say "Can you crunch down? I want to whisper something  in your ear."
***
I was chopping peppers when Ian came up behind me and hugged around my legs so forcefully that we both toppled to the floor. The following discussion ensued:
Bye bye Mom. I am leaving for college now.
Oh yeah? Which college are you headed to? Don't you need some money?
BYU, and I don't need any money. I have my pajamas and basketball clothes (gestures to drawstring bag on back) and that's all I am going to need. I decided not to play BYU football after all because I am playing basketball.
Oh great! Will you say hi to Jimmer Fredette for me when you get there?
No, he plays for the Kings team in Sacramento now, Mom. Well, see ya never again Mom! I love you tons and tons and tons! (slams the back door, and strolls toward the back fence.)

Similar conversations happen daily, but this time he said he loved me "tons and tons"! Usually he says he won't even miss me.
***
At the dentist today Joseph seemed to enjoy the cleaning. From the moment we entered the office he held his  his mouth wide open, just so he could be ready! The dentist thought it was hilarious and kept inviting Joseph to shut his mouth while he explained the "teeth pictures", tools and fluoride. If only Joseph would do that when I try to brush his teeth! Ian seemed more ill-at-ease there, and during the whole exam his legs were squirming a little, though the tried hard to keep his mouth open and cooperate.

While waiting for Ian's x-rays to be done, we chatted with the dentist. I told Ian that if he kept working hard to learn math and science, he could grow up to be a dentist too. He said, "Well only if I want to."

Here is some of that math he likes doing. If he doesn't have enough fingers to figure it out, he draws dots and then counts them.

These wild kids are so much fun! And so tiring. And embarrassing. And aggravating. And worth it.

Helen is 5 Months Old!

The week before Thanksgiving we (Scott) sleep-trained her, and she is now sleeping at least 12 hours straight at night. We used the Ferber method like we did with the boys, and just like her brothers she learned within 2 nights how to do it. She also naps for an hour at 9 am, and about 3 hours starting at 1 pm. She goes to bed for the night around 6:30 pm, and wakes up around 7:00 am. She is so much happier now that she is sleeping better. We all are!

She tried rice cereal for the first time at 5 months. She loved it from the beginning, but it has taken a few weeks for her to master swallowing it. She seems to prefer oatmeal cereal now.

She grabs at everything, likes holding on to her feet, rolls well from her tummy to back, and is now unswaddled! She loves to hold her muslin swaddling blanket when sleeping.

Happy 31st Birthday Scott!

Scott celebrated his 31st Birthday back in October. He grilled steak for dinner and we had O'Boy Oatmeal cake. Ian made his Daddy a Birthday Badge to wear to work, too. The boys divulged all of Scott's birthday presents the day before, but I have gotten used to the fact that it's nearly impossible to surprise Scott anyway. Plus, I had another surprise up my sleeve for later on that week...

Last year Scott spent a super-lame 30th Birthday all alone in Angola, so I decided to throw him a surprise birthday this year! It took place at the community center near our home the Saturday after his 31st birthday.

Several things throughout the day tipped Scott off (like the fact that I disappeared for several hours that afternoon and was caught in a lie about where I was...) He was starting to ask a lot of questions, but I reassured him it was nothing big -- just a night out together to celebrate his birthday. But while I was driving to the babysitters house he called to say he was tired and would rather stay in that night if that was okay with me. Now I know this man well, and I called his bluff. I told him that was just fine with me, we could just wait until next week... I was so relived when he called right back to say he was just kidding and was excited to go out after all. Phew, I was glad I passed his 'test'!

I blindfolded him for the drive there and tried to take a less-familiar route . But when we passed the Exxon station he said (while blindfolded) "If I had known we were coming this way I would have suggested we drive the car that is low on gas." So I did a few more maneuvers and drove around some residential streets to try to confuse him. Eventually, he didn't know where we were.

SURPRISE!

I had tons of help setting up, decorating and baking treats. I could not have pulled this off by myself and I really appreciate all the great friends who stepped in, and everyone who joined us for the party!

Scott, Jimmy and Ryan singing "Wish They All Could be California Girls" to their ladies.

Childhood favorites, Ninja Turtles and Transformers, played in the background.

I really regret getting a babysitter for the boys. I figured it would be too hard to be a hostess and keep an eye on them, but they would have had a blast dancing and running around with all the kids there. Scott missed celebrating with them too.

Happy Birthday to the best Dad on the planet! I love being your wife and best friend.

Joseph's Birthday Party!

Joseph had his first "friend" birthday party this year and invited 6 of his most-talked-about buddies from nursery.

I am not sure exactly how we decided on the Cowboy theme, especially since Joseph didn't even know what a cowboy was-- Oriental Trading must have been having a sale on hats and western cut-outs. But once Joseph he saw his cowboy costume he was really behind it.

Just before the guests arrived Scott put on a western shirt and boots -- dressing up myself hadn't even occurred to me before then, but I threw on my get-up too, strapped Helen in the baby carrier, and we were ready to party!

After putting on cowboy hats and bolero ties and taking pictures in front of a horse cut-out, the cowpokes flew around the world. Popular requests were flying to California and July.

Then we played "find the bandit" and Scott hid this outlaw teddy bear all over the backyard.

Watching the kids cover their eyes was hilarious.

They colored pictures of cowboys, and some of them did it while wearing mustaches.

And my personal favorite game, "Jump the snake". Scott made a cardboard snake head and a rattle (a really old bottle of vitamins) and attached them to a rope. We wiggled the ends while the kids jumped over it, over and over again.

Once cake was mentioned the kids couldn't think about anything else. It was funny how when one of the kids said "cake", the word would ripple through the whole group and they would all come asking for it. This happened several times.

This was probably the ugliest cake of all time. And since I used olive oil in it, it was also probably one of the nastiest. But sticking a plastic horse on top apparently made up for it!

It was really windy and the candles wouldn't even light. But after we finished singing Happy Birthday Joseph hesitated for only a second before "blowing" them out.

Joseph had no idea his friends would bring presents -- boy was he pleasantly surprised! Ian has even let him play with some of the gifts. I thought it was so fun and so fitting for Joseph that every single gift was a car, truck or motorcycle. Perfect! I also loved that each guest arrived and said "Hi Joseph! It's a (insert contents of present)." Three year olds are so fun!

We are glad you had such a fun time, Joseph! We love you!

Joseph's 3rd Birthday!

Some of the traditional Larson Family Birthday Pictures. We decided to celebrate his birthday a day early, since Scott was away doing Tough Mudder on Oct. 8.

Then Ian presented Joseph with his "birthday badge", which Ian had made in the hours he was awake that morning before Joseph was... I thought it was so sweet that Ian remembered and wanted to make sure Joseph had one. Ian wrote "Happy 3rd Birthday Joseph" on it all by himself.

We then enjoyed breakfast with Daddy, and Joseph got to sit in a special decorated chair. The rest of the day was pretty normal, but we sang to Joseph several times. And we bounced around balloons.

Joseph had been asking to have a "hard taco" not a "squishy taco" from Taco Bell for his birthday dinner. But then Scott offered him his very own pizza from Little Ceasars, and Joseph quickly decided that was better.

He was thrilled! Joseph shared a slice with Daddy, and Daddy only.

Then it was time for cake! Joseph selected this pink cake with tons of sprinkles.

Joseph (and Ian) had been eagerly anticipating opening all the presents that had been sitting on the mantle all day. First to be opened was a homemade police badge and police hat that Ian had made during naptime. Joseph had wanted his own ever since Ian came home from preschool with one. As you'll see, Joseph didn't take off the hat the rest of the night.

Some favorite presents were badge holders with retracting clips, a baseball bat and ball from Daddy, a bunch of wooden puzzles, an egg-shaped alarm clock just like his brothers, a book about the seasons, and a couple guns that launched little circles up really high. He felt really special, and spoiled!

Helen enjoyed the festivities from her bouncy chair.

And here are some pictures from the archives to show how much (and how fast!) our baby Joseph has grown into a preschooler!

Joseph smiles and makes silly noises and faces constantly. He wants to do everything Ian does, but also enjoys playing by himself where he won't be bossed around by his big brother. He smells everything -- from boxes of macaroni to blankets, to Helen's feet, to his fingers after using the bathroom. While trick-or-treating, he even smelled every single piece of candy he received before dropping it in his bucket.

He enjoys animals, meat, his favorite yellow blanket, string cheese (he asks for it about 6 times a day) and toy cars. He still nurtures his stuffed animals and has several favorite "pets" that he likes to sleep with. He doesn't have many fears -- he seems only afraid of Buzz Lightyear flying out of his dresser drawer at night (this started after he saw a clip from Toy Story) and the red light that blinks on the smoke detector in his room. He picks at every mosquito bite and scab, which is why he has had staph infections so many times, and is covered with tons of tiny scars. Joseph sleeps about 13 hours at night and relishes his long afternoon nap.

He eats nearly anything we put in front of him, and lots of it. He has several favorite friends and when one little friend had surgery a month ago he prayed for her spontaneously throughout the day. Usually his prayers are said really quickly, and almost unintelligibly, and are exactly he same as the time before. He has a really cute lisp and has had an excellent vocabulary from a young age. Joseph still always wears his pants and shirts backwards. He's a natural athlete and is left-handed. We think he is so much fun, and we are so glad he's in our family! Happy 3rd Birthday J Don! We love you so much.
