First Flight

Last weekend Scott checked something off his "must do before I die" list. He flew a plane! For Christmas in 2008 the boys and I got Scott a 'Discovery Flight', which is basically an introductory flying lesson.
Little did we know that Scott was going to do nearly all the flying -- Scott sat in the captains seat and did the take-off, flew for about an hour, and then lined us up with the runway and got us within feet of landing on the ground before the instructor took over.

We were amazed that after a few minutes of explaining the instruments to Scott, the instructor told Scott to fire up the engine and taxi the plane on over to the run-way. By himself. And then Scott made the plane take off! While I have full confidence in Scott, this is about when I started freaking out. In that small aircraft it felt like we were being bounced on the end of a string. I just gripped the seat and stared straight ahead for the first 10 minutes. But then I saw our neighborhood below us, and this great view of Lake Conroe:

Once we were in the air the instructor pointed out the sites below us and gave maneuvering challenges for Scott to try, such as changing our altitude, turning, or selecting a site visible in the distance and then flying us to it. I can only think of two times the instructor intervened and piloted the plane-- once after we were already up in the air to just level us off or something, and then just before the wheels touched down on the runway again. Thankfully, Scott was a natural. Doesn't he look the part?
In fact, Scott asked questions about some more advanced piloting stuff, which lead to my my favorite quote by the instructor which began with: "Now that I know you are not totally bad at this" I will let you do something that I don't usually do on first flights. He then proceeded to teach Scott some fine tuning on how to use the rudders for even smoother turns. It was really amazing how good Scott was at maneuvering that plane from the moment he sat in it. Much to my relief, we all survived the flight.

I loved watching familiar landmarks from above. We could not have asked for a more beautiful, clear day to fly. From The Woodlands we could even see downtown Houston! See the 'tiny' buildings along the horizon?
I fretted over this flight for weeks, feeling certain that we would crash in a fiery ball of death and in one fell swoop leave our boys orphans. And it didn't help that when I mentioned our upcoming flight to my sister, her first response was "Don't wear synthetics; they will melt to your skin if you crash. Leather is a better option. That sounds fun though!" Thanks, sis.

When we signed a waiver before the flight, I included the phone number of the friend who was watching our boys, and instructed the receptionist that "this person has our children. You'll need to call her if we die." The receptionist laughed. But I was serious.

But evidently I had no need to be so worried. We had a great time and I would jump at the chance to do it again. But only if Scott was captain.

WOW!!! I am SO IMPRESSED!!! Scott flew a plane? That is SO COOL!!

I'm so impressed you encouraged him to do it while he's young! I would of made Dan wait until he was 65 years old or older! he he he!! You are such a supportive wife! He's soo lucky to have you! :)

Those views were fantastic Lesley! That is such a thoughtful and creative present!!

Oh my goodness!! What a cool present, and how awesome that he was a natural, and WOW I can't believe that the flight instructor let him do so much! I would be scared too--don't feel bad. I can't believe that your sister's first thoughts are about what's the best thing to WEAR in a crash, haha :) Anyways, SO COOL.

THAT IS AWESOME!!!! I went up in a helicopter one time, and it was the most amazing experience. I can't even imagine how fun it must've been for Scott to FLY the plane!! Wow, I'm really impressed with his skills. Nice job!! What a fun present!!

You are one brave woman! And it sounds like you've got yourself a natural pilot. Thankfully he's a quick learner. The pictures you took of Lake Conroe & downtown Houston are a-mazing!

WOW. You are both so brave. Flying a plane scares me to death... I can't imagine sitting in a plane that my husband was flying. You are both amazing! Great job, Scott!

that is really cool. I am not shocked that Scott is a natural. Is he going to go on and get his license now?
You don't have to buy your own plane, you can "time share" them, and then you could come visit more :)

Katie, that is a terrifying idea. Except I would love a way to easily come see you guys A LOT more often.

That is AMAZING!!! Wow!! And of course Scott rocked it. Is there anything he can't do? Your sister's comment made me laugh out loud. What a great present!

I will finally let curtis take lessons and then we can just "share" a jet. :)

I love to fly. I made over 350 flights for USU to fly to distance education site. For many I sat in the co-pilot seat and held the controls. The pilot never let me take off or adjust our flight though. Way to go, Son.

Hhhhmmm. I was just thinking--daydreaming--the other day about what I'd need to do to take a flight like this myself. Maybe I'll just ask Scott what it was like.

P.S. Scott. Hypothetically speaking, where would I look for some introductory information on aerodynamics, aircraft construction, and um, gliders?

That is awesome but I would of been just like you. It is a good thing that he is good at it! Your sister is funny! Josephs room turned out so cute now you guys can fly to Idaho and help me decorate for my little girls!

That's awesome! And, might I add, brave on your part as well as Scott's! I don't know if I could do it. Pretty cool though!

Great. Thanks a lot. I just read Troy's comment. I'm glad you survived. I think I will bring my kids with so we can all die together.

Very impressive - first to Scott for doing this, and second to Lesley for surviving the stress!! Looks like so much fun and quite the adventure!!

How fun! Justin will love these pictures--I'll show him tonight! So many people have that dream and don't get to do it. Way to be so supportive and thoughtful!

It reminds me of the first time I went with Justin. Only when I went there was no instructor; just Justin after he had done his first solo flight. He had it all timed right so we landed during the sunset in provo--so romantic! I look back now and can't believe I didn't leave behind some sort of instuctions for our kids too!

That sounds like a ton of fun! Although, I have a tendency to freak out on commercial airplanes...with experienced pilots. I don't think I could do that!

That is amazing! I love flying. It sounds like a great experience.
